About Vashon Island
Vashon Island is located in Puget Sound between Seattle and Tacoma in King County, Washington. The island, along with its smaller neighbor Maury Island (connected by an isthmus), forms a census-designated place with a population of approximately 11,000 residents. Vashon Island is accessible only by ferry, with Washington State Ferries providing service from Fauntleroy in West Seattle to the north end and from Point Defiance in Tacoma to the south end. The island is known for its rural atmosphere, artistic community, and agricultural heritage, despite its proximity to major urban centers.
Geography
Vashon Island has a land area of approximately 37 square miles, while Maury Island adds about 5 square miles. The combined area is often referred to simply as Vashon Island due to the narrow isthmus connecting them. The island's topography features rolling hills, forests, and beaches. The highest point reaches approximately 400 feet above sea level. The western shore faces Colvos Passage and the Kitsap Peninsula, while the eastern shore looks toward Des Moines, SeaTac, and the King County mainland. The northern tip faces across to West Seattle, and the southern portion overlooks Dalco Passage and Tacoma.
History
The island was inhabited by Coast Salish peoples for thousands of years before European contact. Captain George Vancouver named Vashon Island in 1792 after his friend James Vashon of the British Royal Navy. Euro-American settlers arrived in the mid-to-late 19th century, establishing logging operations and farms. By the early 20th century, Vashon had become an important agricultural area, known for strawberries and other crops.
The island maintained a largely rural character throughout the 20th century. The construction of ferry service facilitated commuting to Seattle and Tacoma, but the island resisted incorporation and suburban-style development. Today, Vashon remains unincorporated, with services provided by King County.
Community and Culture
Vashon Island has a distinctive culture characterized by environmental consciousness, artistic pursuits, and community engagement. The downtown area of Vashon town features local businesses, restaurants, galleries, and the historic Vashon Theatre, originally built in 1940. The island hosts numerous artists, craftspeople, and performers, with galleries and studios open to visitors.
The island is home to several parks and natural areas. Point Robinson Park, located on Maury Island, features a lighthouse built in 1885 and offers beach access and camping facilities. Maury Island Marine Park and other county and community parks provide recreational opportunities. Agriculture remains important, with farms producing strawberries, lavender, and other crops, and the Vashon Island Growers Association organizing a popular summer farmers market.
Educational services include several elementary schools, Chautauqua Elementary School, and Vashon Island High School. The island has a strong sense of community identity, with residents often emphasizing local sustainability, environmental protection, and independent businesses. Annual events include the Strawberry Festival, Art Studio Tour, and various community gatherings. The island's relative isolation by ferry has helped preserve its rural and artistic character despite regional growth pressures.
