About Siesta Key
State: Florida.
County: Sarasota.
Population: ~ 5,500.
Area: 8 sq mi (21 sq km).
Siesta Key is a barrier island located on the Gulf of Mexico coast in Sarasota County, Florida, United States.
The island stretches approximately 8 miles (13 km) in length and is connected to the mainland by two causeways. Its permanent population is around 5,500 people, though the number increases significantly during tourist season.
Siesta Beach, situated on the island's western shore, is widely regarded as one of the finest beaches in the United States. Its sand consists of approximately 99% pure quartz crystal, which gives it a distinctive bright white appearance. Due to the thermal properties of quartz, the sand remains relatively cool to the touch even under intense summer sunlight.
The beach has received numerous accolades. It was ranked #1 Beach in the United States by TripAdvisor's Travelers' Choice Awards in 2020 and has received top rankings from coastal researcher Stephen Leatherman, also known as "Dr. Beach."
Siesta Key is also home to Crescent Beach and Turtle Beach, two additional public beaches located along the island's southern section. The island supports a local economy based primarily on tourism, real estate, and hospitality.
