Shelter Island is a town in Suffolk County, New York, occupying the entirety of the island of the same name. It is situated between the North Fork and South Fork of Long Island's East End.

The island covers approximately 8,000 acres in total area. It is accessible only by ferry — from North Haven on the South Fork and from Greenport on the North Fork.

As of the 2020 U.S. Census, the town's population was approximately 2,900 permanent residents, though the number rises significantly during summer months.

Roughly one-third of the island — about 2,039 acres — is occupied by the Mashomack Preserve, managed by The Nature Conservancy since 1980. The preserve protects tidal creeks, forests, and wetlands, and serves as an important habitat for osprey and other wildlife.

Shelter Island was first settled by Europeans in 1652. It became a notable refuge for Quakers in the late 17th century, when the proprietor Nathaniel Sylvester offered shelter to members of the Society of Friends who faced persecution in other colonies.

The Shelter Island Heights neighborhood, developed in the 1870s as a Methodist camp meeting ground, retains much of its Victorian-era architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
