Jekyll Island is a barrier island located off the coast of the U.S. state of Georgia. It is one of the Golden Isles of Georgia's barrier islands and measures approximately 5,700 acres (23 sq km) in area. The island is owned by the State of Georgia and managed by the Jekyll Island Authority, a self-supporting state entity responsible for the island's operation and development. By law, 65% of the island must remain in its natural state to preserve the delicate ecosystem.

Originally inhabited by Native Americans, Jekyll Island was purchased in 1886 by a group of wealthy American industrialists who established the exclusive Jekyll Island Club. The club's prominent members included J.P. Morgan, William Rockefeller, Joseph Pulitzer, and the Vanderbilt family. During the winter months, these families would retreat to their "cottages" on the island, which were actually elaborate mansions. The club operated from 1886 until 1942, when it closed due to World War II. In 1947, the state of Georgia purchased the island for $675,000 to create a state park accessible to all residents.

Today, Jekyll Island is a popular tourist destination known for its pristine beaches, historic district, and natural beauty. The island features 10 miles of beaches, including Driftwood Beach on the north end, famous for its weathered tree remnants creating a surreal landscape. Other notable beaches include Glory Beach, which was featured in the film "Glory," South Dunes Beach, and St. Andrews Beach, which offers excellent bird-watching opportunities.

The Jekyll Island Historic District, also known as the Millionaires' Village, is a 240-acre complex featuring 34 historic structures, including the restored clubhouse, which now operates as the Jekyll Island Club Resort. This district is a National Historic Landmark and provides visitors with a glimpse into America's Gilded Age. The Georgia Sea Turtle Center, opened in 2007, serves as a rehabilitation, research, and education facility dedicated to sea turtles.

Jekyll Harbor Marina provides docking facilities for boats, while the Jekyll Island Convention Center hosts various events throughout the year. The island also features four golf courses, a water park called Summer Waves, and over 20 miles of biking trails. The main residential and commercial area is Jekyll Village, which contains shops, restaurants, and services for visitors and the approximately 1,000 permanent residents.

Access to Jekyll Island requires crossing a causeway from the mainland and paying an entrance fee, which helps fund conservation efforts. The island's temperate climate makes it a year-round destination, though summer months bring larger crowds. The careful balance between development and conservation ensures that Jekyll Island maintains its natural charm while providing modern amenities for visitors.
