About Gasparilla Island

Gasparilla Island is a barrier island located on Florida's Gulf Coast in the southwestern portion of the state. The island stretches approximately 7 miles (11 km) long and is less than 1 mile (1.6 km) wide at its widest point. It is situated between Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico, spanning parts of both Charlotte and Lee counties. The island is named after the legendary pirate José Gaspar, also known as "Gasparilla," who allegedly used the island as a base for his operations in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, though historical evidence of his existence remains disputed.

The island is accessible via a causeway and toll bridge from the mainland at Placida. The Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority maintains the causeway, which was completed in 1958 to replace the previous ferry service. The toll for crossing to the island helps maintain its infrastructure and limits excessive traffic, contributing to the island's exclusive atmosphere.

Two main communities exist on the island. Boca Grande is the principal settlement, located on the southern portion of the island. This upscale community is known for its historic downtown area, lack of high-rise buildings, absence of traffic lights, and strict building codes that help maintain its old Florida charm. The northern part of the island contains the smaller community of Gasparilla, which is primarily residential.

The island's history includes periods of phosphate mining and shipping. The Charlotte Harbor and Northern Railway was extended to the southern tip of the island in the early 1900s to transport phosphate for export. The railroad's former path has been converted into a popular recreational trail now known as the Boca Grande Bike Path.

Tourism and fishing are major economic drivers for Gasparilla Island. The island is world-renowned for its tarpon fishing, particularly during the annual tarpon migration through Boca Grande Pass from April through June. This has earned it the nickname "Tarpon Capital of the World," attracting sport fishermen from around the globe. The annual World's Richest Tarpon Tournament draws significant participation.
