About Folly Island

Folly Island is a barrier island located in Charleston County, South Carolina, approximately 10 miles south of Charleston. This 7-mile long, 1,000-acre island is situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Folly River, forming part of the string of Sea Islands along the southeastern coast of the United States. The island's name is believed to have originated from the Old English term "folly," meaning "dense foliage."

The island's only incorporated area is the city of Folly Beach, often referred to as "the Edge of America." With a permanent population of approximately 2,400 residents, this number swells significantly during summer months as tourists flock to the island's beaches. The city occupies the entire island and serves as a popular vacation destination for visitors seeking a more relaxed alternative to nearby Charleston.

Folly Island has a rich historical background, particularly during the American Civil War. In 1863, it served as a major Union base during the siege of Charleston. The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, one of the first official African American units in the United States Army (featured in the film "Glory"), was stationed here. Archaeological evidence of these military operations continues to be discovered on the island.

The island features several notable beaches and attractions. Folly Beach County Park is located at the western end of the island and offers amenities including lifeguards, restrooms, and picnic areas. The Washout is a popular surfing spot on the island's northeastern end, created when Hurricane Hugo washed away several homes in 1989, creating ideal surfing conditions. Morris Island Lighthouse, while not on Folly Island itself, is visible from the island's eastern end and stands as an iconic landmark.

Folly Beach Pier

Folly Beach Pier, officially named Edwin S. Taylor Folly Beach Fishing Pier, extends 1,045 feet into the Atlantic Ocean and is a center for fishing and community events. After structural issues were discovered, the original pier was demolished in 2021, and a new pier opened in 2023.

The island's ecosystem includes maritime forests, salt marshes, and dunes that support diverse wildlife, including loggerhead sea turtles that nest on its beaches. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect these natural habitats and the island's delicate coastal environment from erosion and development pressures.
