About Fire Island

Fire Island is a barrier island located parallel to the south shore of Long Island, New York. Measuring approximately 31 miles (50 km) in length and varying between 520 and 1,300 feet (160 and 400 m) in width, this narrow coastal landform is separated from the mainland by the Great South Bay. The island has a year-round population of about 777 residents according to the 2020 census, though this number swells significantly during summer months when tourists and seasonal homeowners arrive.

The island's history dates back to Native American use, but its modern development began in the late 19th century. In 1825, the federal government constructed the Fire Island Lighthouse at the western end of the island to guide ships entering New York Harbor. This 180-foot tall structure remains one of the island's most iconic landmarks and is open to visitors. Fire Island gained prominence as a resort destination in the mid-20th century, particularly becoming known as a haven for LGBTQ+ communities starting in the 1950s.

Fire Island is home to several distinct communities, each with its own character. Major settlements include Ocean Beach, the largest village with numerous restaurants and shops; Saltaire, an incorporated village with a more family-oriented atmosphere; Fair Harbor, known for its relaxed vibe; Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines, historic LGBTQ+ communities known for their vibrant social scenes; and Davis Park at the eastern end. Most of these communities are car-free, with transportation limited to walking, bicycles, and small electric carts, contributing to the island's unique atmosphere.

A significant portion of Fire Island—approximately 26 miles—is protected as part of the Fire Island National Seashore, established by Congress in 1964 to preserve the island's natural environment. This protected area includes the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness, the only federally designated wilderness area in New York State. The island's ecosystem features maritime forests, dunes, salt marshes, and beaches that support diverse wildlife, including migratory birds, white-tailed deer, and the rare Piping Plover.

Popular recreational areas include Robert Moses State Park at the western end, offering swimming, fishing, and picnicking facilities; Smith Point County Park at the eastern end; and numerous public beaches throughout the island such as Kismet Beach and Watch Hill Beach. The island is accessible primarily by ferry services from Bay Shore, Sayville, and Patchogue on Long Island, though the western and eastern ends can be reached by car via the Robert Moses Causeway and Smith Point Bridge respectively.
