About Eatons Neck

Eatons Neck is a peninsula and census-designated place (CDP) located in the Town of Huntington in Suffolk County, New York. Despite its name, it is technically a peninsula rather than an island, connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land. According to the 2020 census, Eatons Neck has a population of approximately 1,400 residents.

The peninsula is situated on the North Shore of Long Island, extending into Long Island Sound. It covers an area of about 3.84 square miles (9.94 sq km), with much of the land being residential. Eatons Neck is known for its scenic coastline, maritime history, and relative seclusion despite being only about 40 miles from New York City. The area was named after Theophilus Eaton, a merchant and co-founder of the New Haven Colony, who purchased the land from local Native Americans in 1646.

One of the most notable landmarks on Eatons Neck is the Eatons Neck Light, the second oldest lighthouse in New York State. Commissioned by President George Washington and constructed in 1798, this historic lighthouse stands 73 feet tall and remains an active navigational aid operated by the United States Coast Guard. The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and continues to serve as an important maritime landmark for vessels navigating Long Island Sound.

Eatons Neck Beach and Hobart Beach are popular recreational areas for residents and visitors. Hobart Beach Park features a boat ramp, picnic areas, and swimming facilities. The peninsula is also home to the Eatons Neck Coast Guard Station, established in 1934, which serves as a vital search and rescue facility for the western Long Island Sound region.

The area is primarily residential, with no commercial centers within the peninsula itself. Residents typically travel to nearby communities such as Northport or Huntington for shopping and services. The Eatons Neck community is served by the Northport-East Northport School District. Due to its coastal location, the peninsula has several private beach associations and boating clubs that form an important part of the local community structure.

Access to Eatons Neck is limited to a single road, Eatons Neck Road, which connects the peninsula to the mainland. This geographic isolation has helped preserve the area's natural beauty and quiet residential character through the decades.
