About Bainbridge Island

Bainbridge Island is a city and island located in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The island lies in Puget Sound, directly west of Seattle across Elliott Bay. With a population of approximately 25,000 residents as of recent census data, it is one of the most densely populated islands in Puget Sound. The city of Bainbridge Island encompasses the entire island and was officially incorporated in 1991 through the merger of the two existing municipalities on the island.

Geography and Climate

The island covers an area of approximately 27.6 square miles, with about 27.5 square miles of land and 0.1 square miles of water. Bainbridge Island measures roughly 10 miles from north to south and 5 miles from east to west at its widest points. The terrain is characterized by rolling hills, dense forests, and a rocky coastline. The highest point on the island reaches approximately 425 feet above sea level.

The island experiences a temperate oceanic climate typical of the Puget Sound region. Annual precipitation averages around 50 inches, with the majority falling between October and March. Summer months are relatively dry, with temperatures typically ranging from the mid-60s to mid-70s Fahrenheit. Winter temperatures generally remain above freezing, averaging in the 40s.

Transportation

Bainbridge Island is connected to Seattle by Washington State Ferries, operating from the Bainbridge Island ferry terminal to Coleman Dock in downtown Seattle. The ferry crossing takes approximately 35 minutes and is one of the most heavily used routes in the Washington State Ferries system, carrying millions of passengers and vehicles annually. State Route 305 is the main highway running through the island, connecting the ferry terminal to the Agate Pass Bridge, which links Bainbridge Island to the Kitsap Peninsula.

History

The island was originally inhabited by the Suquamish people for thousands of years before European contact. Captain George Vancouver explored the area in 1792, and the island was later named after Commodore William Bainbridge of the United States Navy. During the 19th century, logging became the primary industry, with several lumber mills operating on the island. The Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial commemorates the forced removal of Japanese American residents during World War II, when 276 people were sent to internment camps.

Economy and Culture

The island's economy is primarily service-based, with many residents commuting to Seattle for work. Tourism plays a significant role, particularly during summer months. Downtown Winslow, the island's main commercial district, features numerous shops, restaurants, galleries, and the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, which opened in 2013. The island hosts several annual events and has a thriving arts community.

The island is home to numerous parks and recreational facilities, including Fay Bainbridge Park, Fort Ward Park, and Bloedel Reserve, a 150-acre public garden featuring native Northwest plants and Japanese garden elements. Educational institutions on the island include several elementary schools, Woodward Middle School, and Bainbridge High School.
