Williams was founded in 1881 and named after mountain man William "Old Bill" Williams, who trapped in the area in the 1830s. The town was officially incorporated in 1895. It developed as a railroad and logging town following the arrival of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad in 1882.
Williams is widely known as the "Gateway to the Grand Canyon", as it sits at the southern terminus of the Grand Canyon Railway, which has operated passenger service to Grand Canyon Village since 1901. The town was the last community on Route 66 to be bypassed by Interstate 40, an event that occurred on October 13, 1984.
The city lies at an elevation of about 6,766 feet (2,062 m) and experiences a humid continental climate with cold, snowy winters and warm summers. Williams covers a total area of approximately 43.7 square kilometers. Notable nearby natural features include Bill Williams Mountain, Kaibab Lake, and Cataract Lake.
The local economy is based primarily on tourism, supported by Route 66 heritage attractions, the Grand Canyon Railway, and outdoor recreation in the surrounding national forest. Bearizona Wildlife Park, a drive-through wildlife park opened in 2010, is among the town's main attractions. Williams is served by Interstate 40, historic U.S. Route 66, and State Route 64, which leads north to Grand Canyon National Park.
