About Purdue University
Purdue University is a public land-grant research university located in West Lafayette, Indiana, United States. The institution was founded in 1869 following a donation of land and money by businessman and philanthropist John Purdue. It is the flagship campus of the Purdue University system.
The university was established as a land-grant institution under the Morrill Act, with a focus on agriculture, engineering, and practical sciences. Classes began in 1874 with six instructors and 39 students.
Purdue University is particularly renowned for its engineering programs and has consistently ranked among the top engineering schools in the United States. The College of Engineering is one of the largest in the country by enrollment. The university also maintains strong programs in agriculture, business, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, and technology. Purdue is classified as an R1 research university, indicating very high research activity, and receives substantial funding for research projects across various disciplines.
The university has a notable connection to space exploration and aviation. Purdue has been called the "Cradle of Astronauts" as it has produced 25 astronauts, including Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the Moon, and Eugene Cernan, the last person to walk on the Moon.
The athletic teams compete in the Big Ten Conference and are known as the Boilermakers. The university's main campus spans approximately 2,468 acres.
Purdue University currently enrolls over 50,000 students across all its campuses, making it one of the largest universities in the United States. The university operates several regional campuses throughout Indiana in addition to the main West Lafayette campus.
