About Stowe
Stowe is a town in Lamoille County, Vermont, United States. As of the 2020 census, the town had a population of 5,223. Stowe is located approximately 27 miles east of Burlington and 10 miles north of Waterbury, along Vermont Route 100.
The town was chartered by the government of Vermont on June 8, 1763, and was first settled in 1794 by Oliver Luce. The name is believed to derive from Stowe in Buckinghamshire, England. Stowe was originally an agricultural community, with farming and lumbering serving as the primary economic activities during the 19th century.
Stowe is best known as a ski resort town. Stowe Mountain Resort, located on Mount Mansfield, the highest peak in Vermont at 4,395 feet, is one of the oldest and most prominent ski destinations in the eastern United States. Skiing began on Mount Mansfield in the 1930s, and the first rope tow was installed in 1936. The Civilian Conservation Corps cut some of the earliest trails on the mountain during that decade. In 2017, the resort was acquired by Vail Resorts.
The village of Stowe is home to several historic structures, including the Stowe Community Church, built in 1863, whose white steeple is a recognizable landmark. The Stowe Recreation Path, an 5.5-mile paved greenway completed in 1989, runs through the village along the West Branch of the Little River.
The Trapp Family Lodge, established in the 1940s by the Austrian family whose story inspired The Sound of Music, is located in Stowe and operates as a resort hotel.
Stowe's economy is largely based on tourism, with year-round activities including alpine and cross-country skiing, hiking, cycling, and leaf-peeping during the autumn foliage season. The town is served by Vermont Route 100 and Vermont Route 108, the latter of which passes through Smugglers' Notch, a narrow mountain pass that is closed during winter months.
