About St. Louis Lambert International Airport
St. Louis Lambert International Airport (IATA: STL, ICAO: KSTL) is a major commercial airport serving the Greater St Louis metropolitan area in Missouri, United States. Located approximately 14 miles northwest of downtown St. Louis, the airport operates as the primary aviation gateway for the region and serves as a focus city for Southwest Airlines.
Originally established in 1920 as Lambert Field, the airport was named after Albert Bond Lambert, an early aviation pioneer and pharmaceutical manufacturer. The facility underwent significant expansion and modernization throughout the decades, officially becoming Lambert-St. Louis International Airport in 1971 before adopting its current name in 2019.
The airport features two passenger terminals connected by a pedestrian walkway. Terminal 1 primarily serves Southwest Airlines and several international carriers, while Terminal 2 accommodates most other domestic airlines. Lambert International operates four runways, with the longest measuring 11,019 feet, capable of handling large commercial aircraft including wide-body jets. The airport's infrastructure includes 78 gates across both terminals.
Historically, Lambert served as a major hub for Trans World Airlines (TWA) until the carrier's acquisition by American Airlines in 2001. This transition significantly reduced the airport's passenger traffic and flight operations. Despite this decline, Lambert International continues to serve over 15 million passengers annually, connecting St. Louis to more than 70 destinations across the United States and internationally.
The airport plays a crucial economic role in the St. Louis region, employing thousands of workers and contributing billions of dollars to the local economy. Lambert International also serves as a cargo hub, handling substantial freight operations that support regional commerce and distribution networks throughout the Midwest.
