The town was incorporated in 1973. According to the 2020 United States Census, its permanent population was approximately 2,066, though the number of visitors and seasonal residents rises dramatically during peak tourist periods. The community occupies only the developed southern tip of the barrier island, while the remainder of Padre Island to the north is largely undeveloped and includes the Padre Island National Seashore, which is administered separately.

South Padre Island has a semi-arid to humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot summers and mild winters, which supports year-round tourism.

The local economy is based primarily on tourism. The island is a popular destination for beachgoers, fishing, water sports, birdwatching, and observing sea turtles and dolphins. It is widely known as a spring break destination, attracting large numbers of college students in March. Sea Turtle, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of sea turtles, operates on the island.

The Queen Isabella Causeway, opened in 1974, is the primary connection between the island and the mainland; at roughly 3.74 miles (9.68 km) it is one of the longest bridges in Texas. In 2001, a portion of the causeway collapsed after being struck by barges, resulting in several deaths. The island is also subject to tropical storms and hurricanes originating in the Gulf of Mexico.
