About University of Notre Dame

The University of Notre Dame du Lac, commonly known as Notre Dame, is a private Catholic research university located in Notre Dame, Indiana, near the city of South Bend. Founded in November 1842 by Father Edward Sorin, a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross, the university was established on land donated by the Bishop of Vincennes. The institution's name derives from the French phrase meaning "Our Lady of the Lake," referring to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the two lakes on campus.

The university is organized into seven schools and colleges, including the College of Arts and Letters, the College of Science, the College of Engineering, the Mendoza College of Business, the School of Architecture, the Law School, and the Keough School of Global Affairs. Notre Dame maintains its Catholic character while enrolling students of all religious backgrounds.

The Golden Dome, topped with a statue of Mary, serves as the university's most recognizable landmark and appears on the Main Building, which was rebuilt after a fire in 1879.

Notre Dame's athletic teams, known as the Fighting Irish, compete in NCAA Division I and are particularly renowned for their football program. The football team has won multiple national championships and produced numerous Heisman Trophy winners. The university's colors are gold and blue, and the athletic programs have no official conference affiliation for football, though other sports compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The university's endowment exceeds several billion dollars, ranking it among the wealthiest educational institutions in the United States. Notre Dame's acceptance rate has become increasingly selective over the decades.
