Walking Routes in Seattle
Seattle offers numerous walking routes that showcase the city's diverse neighborhoods, waterfronts, and natural features. The Burke-Gilman Trail is a popular multi-use trail extending approximately 27 miles from Seattle's Ballard neighborhood to Bothell, following a former railroad corridor. The trail accommodates both pedestrians and cyclists, passing through several Seattle neighborhoods and along Lake Washington's northern shore.
Downtown Seattle features several pedestrian-friendly routes including the waterfront promenade along Elliott Bay, which was redesigned and improved following the removal of the Alaskan Way Viaduct. The route extends from Pioneer Square to the Olympic Sculpture Park, offering views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. Pike Place Market and surrounding streets create a walkable district with pedestrian-priority areas.
Neighborhood walking routes include the Fremont neighborhood's quirky public art walk, the Capitol Hill area's commercial district along Broadway, and the University District near the University of Washington campus. Green Lake Park features a 2.8-mile paved path circling Green Lake, popular with walkers, runners, and cyclists. The Seattle Center area, home to the Space Needle, provides pedestrian paths connecting various attractions. Discovery Park, Seattle's largest park at 534 acres, offers multiple trail options through forests, meadows, and along beaches with views of Puget Sound. The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, also known as the Ballard Locks, feature walking paths and viewing areas where visitors can observe boats passing between Puget Sound and Lake Union.
