About Raleigh–Durham International Airport
Raleigh–Durham International Airport (IATA: RDU, ICAO: KRDU) is a public-use airport located in Wake County, North Carolina, between the cities of Raleigh and Durham. The airport serves the Research Triangle metropolitan area and is situated approximately 4.5 miles northeast of Morrisville and 7.5 miles northwest of downtown Raleigh.
Originally opened in 1943 as Raleigh-Durham Army Air Base, the facility was constructed to support military operations during World War II. Following the war's conclusion, the airfield transitioned to civilian use and was officially renamed Raleigh-Durham Airport in 1946. The airport underwent significant expansion and modernization throughout the following decades.
RDU features two passenger terminals connected by a central concourse system. Terminal 1 primarily serves domestic flights, while Terminal 2 handles both domestic and international operations. The airport operates two parallel runways: Runway 5L/23R measuring 10,000 feet in length, and Runway 5R/23L extending 9,000 feet.
The facility serves as a focus city for several major airlines and handles over 14 million passengers annually, making it one of the busiest airports in the southeastern United States. RDU provides nonstop service to more than 60 destinations across North America, Europe, and other international markets.
Southwest Airlines and American Airlines are the airport's largest carriers by passenger volume. The airport has received numerous awards for customer service and operational efficiency, including recognition from Airports Council International for service quality excellence in the medium-sized airport category.
