Notable attractions include the North Carolina Museum of Art, which features an extensive collection spanning 5,000 years of artistic work, and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, one of the largest natural history museums in the southeastern United States. The North Carolina State Capitol, completed in 1840, serves as a National Historic Landmark and houses the offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor.

The city covers approximately 147 square miles and features numerous parks and green spaces, including Pullen Park, one of the oldest amusement parks in the United States, established in 1887.
