The community was named after Prince William of Orange in the early 18th century. Princeton was the site of the Battle of Princeton on January 3, 1777, during the American Revolutionary War, in which General George Washington's forces defeated British troops. From June 30 to November 4, 1783, Princeton served as the capital of the United States, with the Continental Congress meeting at Nassau Hall.

Princeton is home to Princeton University, founded in 1746 as the College of New Jersey and renamed in 1896. It is one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution and a member of the Ivy League. The town also hosts the Institute for Advanced Study, founded in 1930, where Albert Einstein worked from 1933 until his death in 1955, as well as Princeton Theological Seminary, established in 1812.

Princeton is located approximately 50 miles (80 km) southwest of New York City and 40 miles (64 km) northeast of Philadelphia. The municipality covers a total area of about 18.36 square miles. It is served by the Princeton Branch of NJ Transit, known as the "Dinky," which connects the town to the Northeast Corridor Line at Princeton Junction station.
