About University of Pittsburgh

The University of Pittsburgh is a public state-related research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is commonly known as Pitt.

The university was founded in 1787 as the Pittsburgh Academy. It was renamed the Western University of Pennsylvania in 1819 and adopted its current name in 1908. As a state-related institution, it is a member of the Commonwealth System of Higher Education, receiving public funding while retaining a largely independent governance structure.

The campus is centered in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Its most recognizable landmark is the Cathedral of Learning, a 42-story Gothic Revival building that serves as the tallest educational building in the Western Hemisphere.

The university is classified among research institutions with very high research activity and is a member of the Association of American Universities. In the 1950s, Jonas Salk developed one of the first successful polio vaccines while working at the university's School of Medicine.

Pitt's athletic teams, the Pittsburgh Panthers, compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
