About Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium

Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium is a zoological park and aquarium located in Highland Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. It occupies 77 acres (31 ha) of parkland and houses more than 4,000 animals representing over 600 species, including 22 threatened and endangered species.

The zoo was founded on June 14, 1898, as the Highland Park Zoo after Christopher Lyman Magee donated $125,000 for its construction. Originally built around a single zoological building, it underwent major expansion through the early 20th century. After a period of decline, the zoo closed in the late 1970s for extensive renovation and reopened in 1980 under the management of the Zoological Society of Pittsburgh, a non-profit organization that continues to operate the facility.

The facility is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Its major exhibits include the PPG Aquarium, which opened in 2000 and was expanded in 2023, the Water's Edge polar bear habitat, The Islands, Jungle Odyssey, and the African Savanna. The aquarium portion features a two-story shark tank and exhibits focused on Pennsylvania wildlife and tropical marine ecosystems.

The zoo is open year-round and serves as a center for conservation, education, and research.
