About Duquesne University of the Holy Spirit

Duquesne University is a private Catholic research university located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. Founded in 1878 by members of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, it was originally established as the Pittsburgh Catholic College. The university is situated on a 50-acre campus on the Bluff, overlooking downtown Pittsburgh and the Monongahela River.

The institution was founded to serve the children of immigrants and provide accessible higher education in Western Pennsylvania. It was renamed the College of the Holy Ghost in 1911 and became Duquesne University of the Holy Ghost in the same year, honoring the Marquis du Quesne, the French governor of New France who built Fort Duquesne. The university expanded significantly during the 20th century, developing graduate and professional programs and achieving university status with multiple schools and colleges.

Duquesne comprises nine schools and colleges, including the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts, the Palumbo-Donahue School of Business, the School of Law, and the School of Pharmacy. It is classified as an R2 Doctoral University with high research activity.

As of the early 2020s, the university enrolls approximately 8,000 to 9,000 students, including undergraduate and graduate students. It is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Its athletic teams, known as the Dukes, compete in NCAA Division I as members of the Atlantic 10 Conference for most sports.
