About Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is a private research university located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. It was founded in 1900 by Andrew Carnegie as the Carnegie Technical Schools and became Carnegie Mellon University in 1967 following its merger with the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research.

The university is organized into seven colleges and schools, including the School of Computer Science, College of Engineering, Tepper School of Business, Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Fine Arts, Mellon College of Science, and Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy. It operates on a semester-based academic calendar and is classified as an R1 university for very high research activity. Its main campus is situated on a 157-acre site adjacent to Schenley Park.

As of the early 2020s, total enrollment exceeds 16,000 students, including undergraduate and graduate students. The university's motto is My heart is in the work, derived from Andrew Carnegie.

Carnegie Mellon is widely recognized for its programs in computer science, artificial intelligence, robotics, software engineering, and drama. It manages the Software Engineering Institute, a federally funded research and development center sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense. The university operates additional campuses in Silicon Valley, California, and in Doha, Qatar.
