About Pittsburgh International Airport

Pittsburgh International Airport (IATA: PIT, ICAO: KPIT, FAA LID: PIT) is an international airport serving the Pittsburgh metropolitan area in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It is located in Findlay Township and Moon Township, approximately 16 kilometers west of Downtown Pittsburgh. The airport is owned and operated by the Allegheny County Airport Authority.

The airport was originally opened on May 31, 1952, as Greater Pittsburgh Airport. For several decades it served as a major hub for Trans World Airlines and, most notably, for US Airways, which operated its largest hub at Pittsburgh from the late 1980s until 2004. The current terminal complex, designed to replace the former facility and alleviate congestion, opened on October 1, 1992, at a cost of approximately $1 billion. It was designed by architect Tasso Katselas and was regarded at the time as one of the most modern and innovative airport terminals in the United States.

Pittsburgh International Airport covers an area of approximately 4,100 hectares and has four concrete runways. The longest runway, 10R/28L, is 3,505 meters long, making it one of the longest commercial runways in Pennsylvania.

The passenger terminal consists of a Landside Terminal and a four-concourse Airside Terminal connected by an automated people mover. The X-shaped design of the Airside Terminal was intended to reduce walking distances and facilitate efficient aircraft operations and passenger connections. The airport features an AirMall, a retail concept that prices goods at levels comparable to outside the airport. A major modernization program, known as the Terminal Modernization Program, was initiated to consolidate check-in, security, and baggage operations into a new Landside Terminal adjacent to the Airside Terminal, with the aim of improving efficiency and passenger experience.

As of 2024, the airport is served by several major airlines, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, JetBlue Airways, and Spirit Airlines. It is a focus city for Southern Airways Express and a crew and maintenance base for Allegiant Air. Nonstop services are offered to destinations throughout the United States, as well as limited international services to Canada and Europe, including seasonal service to London-Heathrow and Reykjavik. Cargo operations are significant, with carriers such as FedEx Express and UPS Airlines operating at the facility.

In 2025, the airport served over 9.8 million passengers, reflecting a recovery to near pre-pandemic levels.
