About University of Pennsylvania

The University of Pennsylvania, commonly referred to as Penn, is a private Ivy League research university located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. It was founded in 1740 and is one of nine colonial colleges chartered before the Declaration of Independence. The institution was conceived by Benjamin Franklin, who advocated for an educational program that trained leaders in commerce, government, and public service, and whose educational philosophy remains central to the university's identity.

Penn is situated on a 299-acre urban campus in the University City neighborhood of West Philadelphia. The university operates four undergraduate schools — the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Wharton School, and the School of Nursing — and twelve graduate and professional schools. The Wharton School, founded in 1881, was the first collegiate business school in the United States. Other notable schools include the Perelman School of Medicine, founded in 1765 as the first medical school in the United States, the Carey Law School, and the School of Design.

As of the 2023-2024 academic year, the university enrolls approximately 25,000 students, with roughly 10,000 undergraduates and 15,000 graduate and professional students. The university employs more than 5,000 faculty members. Admission is among the most selective in the United States. Penn is classified as an R1 Doctoral University with very high research activity and maintains an endowment exceeding 20 billion dollars.

The University of Pennsylvania is a member of the Ivy League athletic conference and the Association of American Universities. Its library system comprises more than a dozen libraries holding over six million volumes. The university has produced numerous notable alumni and affiliates, including signers of the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution, members of the United States Congress, governors, university presidents, and recipients of Nobel Prizes, Turing Awards, and Pulitzer Prizes.
