About Temple University
Temple University is a public research university located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1884 by Russell Conwell, a Baptist minister, and is one of the largest universities in the United States by enrollment.
The institution began as a night school for working-class residents of the city. Conwell offered evening classes in the basement of the Grace Baptist Church, known as "The Temple," which gave the university its name. It was formally chartered in 1888.
Today Temple is a state-related university, a designation shared with a small number of other institutions in Pennsylvania. Its main campus is in North Philadelphia, and it operates additional campuses within the region as well as international sites in Rome and Tokyo. The university enrolls tens of thousands of students across its schools and colleges.
Temple's athletic teams are known as the Owls and compete in NCAA Division I.
