About Philadelphia Zoo

The Philadelphia Zoo is a zoological garden located in the Centennial District of Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on March 21, 1859, it is considered the first true zoo in the United States. It opened to the public on July 1, 1874.

The zoo occupies a 42-acre (17-hectare) site and houses approximately 1,300 animals representing more than 300 species. Many of the animals are rare and endangered. The zoo is known for its Zoo360 animal exploration trail system, a network of mesh trails that allows animals such as primates and big cats to move above and across visitor pathways. Exhibits include Big Cat Falls, Bear Country, and the McNeil Avian Center, which holds one of the most comprehensive collections of birds in the country.

Its opening was delayed for 15 years due to the American Civil War. The Victorian gates and gatehouses designed by Frank Furness remain at the main entrance and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Philadelphia Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and participates in cooperative breeding programs for endangered species. It operates a dedicated conservation and education department and supports field projects focused on species including the Rodrigues fruit bat and golden lion tamarin. The zoo is operated by the Zoological Society of Philadelphia.
