About Old City Philadelphia

Old City is a historic neighborhood in Center City, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, located along the Delaware River. It is generally bounded by Vine Street to the north, Walnut Street to the south, Front Street to the east, and 6th Street to the west. The district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Old City Historic District.

The area corresponds to the original settlement of Philadelphia founded by William Penn in 1682. It served as the center of the city's civic and commercial life during the colonial and early federal periods. Many key events of the American Revolution and the founding of the United States took place within its boundaries, and numerous 18th-century buildings have been preserved through federal and municipal preservation efforts since the mid-20th century.

Independence National Historical Park occupies a significant portion of Old City. It contains Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were debated and adopted, and the Liberty Bell Center.

Other notable sites include the Betsy Ross House, Elfreth's Alley, which is the oldest continuously inhabited residential street in the United States dating to 1703, Christ Church, and the National Constitution Center. Today Old City contains museums, galleries, restaurants, and residential buildings, and remains one of Philadelphia's primary tourist destinations and cultural districts.
