About Drexel University
Drexel University is a private research university in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1891 by financier and philanthropist Anthony J. Drexel, originally under the name Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry.
The institution was renamed the Drexel Institute of Technology in 1936 and adopted its current name, Drexel University, in 1970.
Drexel is widely known for its cooperative education program, in which students alternate periods of academic study with paid, full-time employment related to their field. The program is one of the oldest and largest of its kind in the United States, and many undergraduate degrees incorporate one or more co-op cycles as part of the curriculum.
The university operates several campuses in the Philadelphia area, with its main campus located in the University City neighborhood. It offers programs across a range of fields, including engineering, business, medicine, law, and the arts and sciences, and is classified among research universities with high research activity.
Its athletic teams, the Drexel Dragons, compete at the NCAA Division I level.
