About Ojai
Ojai is a city located in Ventura County, California, United States. The city is situated in the Ojai Valley, approximately 15 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean and about 75 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Ojai covers an area of 4.4 square miles and had a population of 7,637 according to the 2020 United States Census.
The area was originally inhabited by the Chumash people before Spanish colonization. The name "Ojai" derives from the Chumash word "A'hwai," meaning "moon." The modern city was established in the early 20th century when glass magnate Edward Drummond Libbey purchased the existing town of Nordhoff in 1916 and renamed it Ojai. Libbey invested heavily in developing the community, commissioning architect Wallace Neff to design buildings in Spanish Colonial Revival style.
Ojai is renowned for its distinctive "pink moment," a natural phenomenon that occurs at sunset when the surrounding mountains glow pink due to the valley's unique east-west orientation. The city hosts the annual Ojai Music Festival, established in 1947, which attracts classical music enthusiasts from around the world. The festival typically takes place in June and features performances at the Libbey Bowl, an outdoor amphitheater built in 1957.
The city's economy relies heavily on tourism, agriculture, and arts. Ojai is known for its organic farming, particularly citrus groves and avocado orchards. The downtown area features the Ojai Arcade, a covered walkway lined with shops and restaurants designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival architectural style.

Notable attractions include the Ojai Valley Museum, which preserves local history, and Meditation Mount, a spiritual center offering panoramic views of the valley. The surrounding Los Padres National Forest provides numerous hiking trails and outdoor recreational opportunities. Ojai has also served as a filming location for numerous movies and television shows, including the 1937 film "Lost Horizon."
