Ogunquit was for many years a village within the town of Wells. It was incorporated as a separate town in 1980.
The town is located along the Atlantic coast in southern Maine. Notable geographic features include Ogunquit Beach, a sand beach extending several miles at the mouth of the Ogunquit River, and Perkins Cove, a small harbor. The Marginal Way, a paved footpath, runs for approximately 1.25 miles along the coastline between the village center and Perkins Cove.
Ogunquit developed as an art colony in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when artists such as Charles Herbert Woodbury established summer schools in the area. The town is home to the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, which opened in 1953, and the Ogunquit Playhouse, a summer theater founded in 1933.
Tourism is the primary economic activity, and the town's population increases substantially during the summer season.
