About Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport
Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (IATA: MSY, ICAO: KMSY) is a public-use commercial airport located in Kenner, Louisiana, approximately 11 miles west of downtown New Orleans. The airport serves as the primary aviation gateway to the Greater New Orleans metropolitan area and southeastern Louisiana region.
Originally opened in 1946 as Moisant Field, the facility was renamed in 2001 to honor jazz legend Louis Armstrong, a New Orleans native. The airport's IATA code "MSY" derives from the original name, referencing John Bevins Moisant, an early aviation pioneer. The airport underwent significant expansion and modernization following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, with a new terminal opening in 2019.
The airport handles approximately 13 million passengers annually, making it one of the busiest airports in the southeastern United States. Southwest Airlines serves as the largest carrier at MSY, followed by Delta Air Lines and American Airlines. The facility offers nonstop service to over 60 destinations across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Central America.
MSY features a single passenger terminal with three concourses (A, B, and C) connected by moving walkways. The terminal incorporates distinctive New Orleans architectural elements and cultural themes throughout its design. Notable amenities include local restaurants featuring Creole and Cajun cuisine, live music venues, and retail outlets showcasing Louisiana products and crafts.
The airport operates two parallel runways: the primary 10,104-foot Runway 11/29 and the secondary 7,849-foot Runway 01/19. These runways can accommodate aircraft ranging from regional jets to wide-body international aircraft. Cargo operations are significant at MSY, with the airport serving as a hub for freight carriers supporting the region's petroleum, agricultural, and maritime industries.
MSY is owned and operated by the New Orleans Aviation Board, a political subdivision of the state of Louisiana. The airport contributes approximately $15.5 billion annually to the regional economy and supports over 100,000 jobs throughout Louisiana.
