About Mendocino
Mendocino is an unincorporated community located in Mendocino County, California, United States. The town sits on bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, approximately 150 miles north of San Francisco. Founded in the 1850s as a logging town, Mendocino was originally established to harvest the abundant redwood forests in the surrounding area. The community was named after Cape Mendocino, which itself was named after Antonio de Mendoza, the first Viceroy of New Spain.

The town's economy was historically based on lumber production, with several sawmills operating in the area during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Mendocino Lumber Company played a significant role in the community's development, constructing many of the Victorian-era buildings that remain today.
Mendocino's historic downtown area was designated as a Historic Preservation District in 1971, recognizing its well-preserved 19th-century architecture. The district encompasses approximately 740 acres and includes numerous Victorian homes, churches, and commercial buildings. Notable structures include the Mendocino Presbyterian Church, built in 1868, and the Kelley House, which now serves as a museum operated by the Kelley House Historical Museum.

The Mendocino Headlands State Park surrounds the town on three sides, providing coastal access and protecting the dramatic oceanfront bluffs. The park offers hiking trails, picnic areas, and scenic viewpoints overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Tourism became increasingly important to Mendocino's economy in the latter half of the 20th century. The town's picturesque setting and Victorian architecture have made it a popular destination for visitors and a frequent filming location for movies and television shows. The area hosts several annual events, including the Mendocino Music Festival and the Mendocino Winegrowers Alliance Crab, Wine and Beer Festival.
According to the 2020 United States Census, the Mendocino census-designated place had a population of 932 residents. The community maintains its small-town character while serving as a gateway to the broader Mendocino Coast region, which includes nearby communities such as Fort Bragg and Albion.
