Longview is a city in Cowlitz County, Washington, United States. It is located approximately 50 miles north of Portland, Oregon, and 130 miles south of Seattle. The city had a population of 37,818 as of the 2020 census, making it the largest city in Cowlitz County.
Longview was founded in 1921 as a planned city by timber baron Robert A. Long, who sought to create a complete community for workers in the timber industry. The city was designed by George Kessler, a prominent landscape architect. Long's company, Long-Bell Lumber Company, established major timber operations in the area, making Longview a significant lumber production center.
The city is situated along the Columbia River, approximately 60 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The Port of Longview is a deep-water port that handles diverse cargo including forest products, agricultural commodities, and bulk materials. It remains one of the largest ports in Washington state by tonnage.
Longview covers approximately 15 square miles. The city's economy continues to be influenced by forest products, though it has diversified to include manufacturing and port-related industries. The Cowlitz River flows through the area before joining the Columbia River near Longview.
