The area was first settled by Europeans in the 1620s and was originally part of the town of Arundel, incorporated in 1653. The community was renamed Kennebunkport in 1821. During the 18th and 19th centuries, it developed as a significant shipbuilding and maritime trading center, with local shipyards producing vessels for both coastal and international commerce.

Today Kennebunkport is best known as a summer resort destination. Its economy relies heavily on tourism, and the town features numerous inns, restaurants, and historic buildings.

The town includes several distinct areas, among them Dock Square, the commercial and social heart of the community, and Cape Porpoise, a working fishing village. Walker's Point, a prominent estate on the coast, has served as the summer home of the Bush family and gained national attention as a vacation retreat used by President George H. W. Bush. According to the United States Census Bureau, the population of Kennebunkport was recorded at 5,776 in the 2020 census.
