The area was originally inhabited by Ancestral Puebloan and later Southern Paiute peoples. The name "Kanab" derives from a Paiute word meaning "willows," referring to the willows that grow along Kanab Creek. Mormon settlers established Fort Kanab in 1864, though it was abandoned due to conflicts with Native Americans. The town was permanently resettled in 1870 under the direction of Jacob Hamblin.

Kanab lies at an elevation of approximately 4,970 feet (1,515 m) and is surrounded by red sandstone cliffs typical of the Colorado Plateau. The city serves as a gateway to several major public lands, including Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Grand Canyon National Park's North Rim, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The nearby Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is another notable attraction.

Beginning in the 1920s, Kanab became a popular filming location and earned the nickname "Little Hollywood." More than 100 Western films and television series have been shot in and around the town, including productions featuring John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and Ronald Reagan. Notable productions filmed in the area include "The Lone Ranger," "Gunsmoke," and "Planet of the Apes" (1968).

The economy of Kanab relies heavily on tourism. The city is also home to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, one of the largest no-kill animal sanctuaries in the United States, founded in 1984 and located in nearby Angel Canyon.

Kanab is served by U.S. Route 89 and U.S. Route 89A. It has a semi-arid climate with hot summers and cool winters.
