About Kahului

Kahului is the largest city and commercial hub on the Hawaiian island of Maui, located on the island's northern coast. With a population of approximately 28,219 residents (as of the 2020 census), it serves as Maui's main commercial and transportation center. The city sits on the isthmus between the West Maui Mountains and Haleakalā, occupying a relatively flat area that was once predominantly sugarcane fields.

Established in the early 20th century as a company town for the sugar industry, Kahului developed around the operations of Alexander & Baldwin's Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company. The city's growth accelerated after World War II, and it gradually replaced Wailuku as Maui's primary commercial center. The last sugar mill in Hawaii operated in Kahului until its closure in 2016, marking the end of the state's 145-year sugar industry.

Kahului is home to Maui's primary transportation infrastructure. Kahului Airport (OGG) serves as the main gateway to the island, handling both inter-island and direct mainland flights. The city also contains Kahului Harbor, Maui's main commercial port, which handles cargo ships, cruise vessels, and serves as a hub for various ocean activities. These transportation facilities have cemented Kahului's position as the island's logistical and commercial center.

Kahului has several large shopping centers that cater to locals and tourists alike. Queen Ka'ahumanu Center, the largest shopping mall on Maui, houses numerous retail stores, restaurants, and entertainment options. Maui Marketplace and Kahului Shopping Center provide additional retail options, while big-box stores like Walmart, Target, and Costco have established locations in the city, giving Kahului a more mainland American commercial character compared to other parts of the island.

Educational and cultural institutions in Kahului include the University of Hawaii Maui College, which offers associate and bachelor's degree programs. The Maui Arts & Cultural Center serves as the island's premier venue for performing arts, visual exhibitions, and cultural events, hosting over 1,800 events annually and attracting more than 260,000 visitors each year.

Unlike other parts of Maui, Kahului is primarily focused on residential and commercial activities rather than tourism. The city experiences a semi-arid climate with relatively low rainfall compared to other parts of the island, averaging about 20 inches annually. Temperatures remain fairly consistent year-round, with average highs ranging from 80°F to 88°F (27°C to 31°C). Kahului's central location makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the rest of Maui, with major attractions like Haleakalā National Park, the Road to Hana, and the resort areas of Wailea and Kaanapali all accessible within an hour's drive.
