About Cornell University

Cornell University is a private Ivy League research university based in Ithaca, New York. It was founded in 1865 by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White.

Cornell was founded with the intention of teaching and making contributions in all fields of knowledge — from the classics to the sciences, and from the theoretical to the applied. Its founder Ezra Cornell famously stated: "I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study." The university was one of the first in the United States to be nonsectarian and to admit students regardless of religion or race, and it became coeducational in 1870.

The university is organized into seven undergraduate colleges and seven graduate divisions at its main Ithaca campus. It also operates Cornell Tech, a graduate campus located on Roosevelt Island in New York City, which opened in 2017, as well as Weill Cornell Medicine, with locations in New York City and Doha, Qatar.

Cornell is a land-grant university, designated as New York State's federal land-grant institution under the Morrill Act of 1862. Four of its undergraduate colleges — Agriculture and Life Sciences, Human Ecology, Industrial and Labor Relations, and parts of the College of Veterinary Medicine — are statutory colleges, partially funded by the State of New York.

As of 2024, Cornell has produced 62 Nobel laureates, 35 MacArthur Fellows, 4 Turing Award winners, and one Fields Medalist among its faculty and alumni. The university enrolls approximately 26,000 students. Its athletic teams, known as the Big Red, compete in NCAA Division I as members of the Ivy League.
