Indianapolis International Airport
Indianapolis International Airport (IATA: IND, ICAO: KIND) is a public airport located seven miles southwest of downtown Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. The airport serves the Indianapolis metropolitan area and is the largest airport in the state of Indiana.
The airport is owned and operated by the Indianapolis Airport Authority. It occupies approximately 7,700 acres of land in Marion County. Indianapolis International Airport replaced the former Weir Cook Airport, which had served the city since 1931.
The current passenger terminal opened on November 11, 2008, replacing the outdated midfield terminal. The new facility was designed by HOK architects and cost approximately $1.1 billion. The terminal features a distinctive civic plaza design with a large glass curtain wall facade providing natural light throughout the main concourse. The building has received numerous architectural and customer service awards, including being named the best airport in North America by Airports Council International multiple times.
The airport has two intersecting runways designated 5L/23R and 5R/23L, both measuring over 10,000 feet in length.
FedEx Express operates its second-largest hub at Indianapolis International Airport, making cargo operations a significant component of the airport's activities. The FedEx facility processes hundreds of thousands of packages daily and employs thousands of workers. This hub contributes substantially to Indianapolis's logistics industry presence.
Major passenger airlines serving the airport include Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Frontier Airlines. The airport offers nonstop flights to over 50 destinations across the United States, as well as seasonal international service.
In 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, the airport handled approximately 9.4 million passengers. The airport has consistently ranked among the top airports in customer satisfaction surveys in North America.
Ground transportation options include rental cars, taxis, ride-sharing services, and the IndyGo public bus system. The terminal features a consolidated rental car facility connected to the main terminal by a climate-controlled walkway.
