About William P. Hobby Airport
William P. Hobby Airport (IATA: HOU, ICAO: KHOU) is a public airport located seven miles southeast of downtown Houston, Texas. The airport serves as a major hub for Southwest Airlines and is the second-busiest airport in the Houston metropolitan area after George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
Originally opened in 1927 as Houston Municipal Airport, the facility was renamed in 1967 to honor William Pettus Hobby, who served as the 27th Governor of Texas from 1917 to 1921. Hobby Airport served as Houston's primary commercial airport until the opening of Houston Intercontinental Airport in 1969.
The airport covers approximately 1,304 acres and operates four runways, with the longest measuring 9,000 feet. Southwest Airlines maintains its largest operational base at Hobby Airport, offering over 180 daily departures to more than 60 destinations across the United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.
In 2015, Hobby Airport opened its new International Terminal, marking its return to international service after a 45-year hiatus. The $156 million terminal expansion includes five gates and modern passenger amenities. The airport handled over 15 million passengers in 2019, making it one of the busiest airports in Texas.
The airport features a single terminal building with three concourses and offers various ground transportation options, including the Metro bus system, rental cars, and ride-sharing services. Hobby Airport plays a crucial role in Houston's aviation infrastructure and continues to serve as an important gateway for leisure and business travelers.
