About Houston
Houston is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Texas and the fourth-most populous city in the United States, with a population of approximately 2.3 million people within the city limits. Located in Southeast Texas near Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, the city serves as the seat of Harris County and is the principal city of the Greater Houston metropolitan area, which is the fifth-most populous metropolitan statistical area in the United States.
The city was founded in 1836 by land investors Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen, and was named after Sam Houston, the president of the Republic of Texas and the hero of the Battle of San Jacinto. Houston became the temporary capital of the Republic of Texas from 1837 to 1839.
Houston's economy is primarily based on the energy industry, particularly oil and natural gas. The city is home to the largest concentration of petrochemical manufacturing in the world and serves as the global headquarters for numerous energy companies. The Port of Houston ranks first in the United States in international waterborne tonnage handled and second in total cargo tonnage handled.
The city is internationally known for the Johnson Space Center, the mission control center for NASA's human spaceflight activities. Other notable attractions include the Houston Museum District, which contains 19 museums, galleries, and community centers. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Zoo, Hermann Park, and the Theater District are significant cultural destinations.
Houston's climate is classified as humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The city experiences significant rainfall throughout the year, with an annual average of approximately 49 inches.
The metropolitan area is home to several major universities, including Rice University, the University of Houston, and Texas Southern University. Houston's diverse population represents a wide variety of ethnic and religious backgrounds, making it one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States.
