The area was settled in the 17th century and was incorporated as a town in 1789, having previously been part of North Yarmouth. Its early economy was based on shipbuilding, fishing, agriculture, and shoe manufacturing.

Freeport is best known as a retail and outlet shopping destination and as the home and headquarters of L.L.Bean, the outdoor clothing and equipment retailer founded there by Leon Leonwood Bean in 1912. The company's flagship store, located in the town's commercial district, is open 24 hours a day year-round and draws millions of visitors annually. The presence of L.L.Bean helped make Freeport a hub for numerous other retail outlets and brand-name stores.

The town includes several natural and coastal areas, among them Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park and the Bradbury Mountain State Park nearby, as well as access to Casco Bay. According to local tradition, Freeport is sometimes referred to as the "birthplace of Maine," reflecting a claim that documents leading to Maine's separation from Massachusetts were signed there in 1820, though this account is not firmly established by historical record.
