About Fort Worth
Fort Worth is a city located in north-central Texas and serves as the county seat of Tarrant County. With a population of approximately 918,915 as of 2020, it ranks as the fifth-largest city in Texas and the thirteenth-largest in the United States. The city forms part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country.
Founded in 1849 as an Army outpost, Fort Worth was named after Major General William Jenkins Worth, who served in the Mexican-American War. The city's strategic location along the Trinity River made it an important stop for cattle drives along the Chisholm Trail during the late 19th century, earning it the nickname "Cowtown." This cattle industry heritage remains central to the city's identity today.
The economy of Fort Worth is diverse, with major industries including aerospace, defense, energy, and transportation. The city hosts the headquarters of several Fortune 500 companies, including American Airlines and Bell Textron. Additionally, Fort Worth serves as a major hub for the aviation industry, with Alliance Airport being one of the first industrial airports in the United States.
Fort Worth's cultural landscape is anchored by the Cultural District, which houses world-renowned institutions such as the Kimbell Art Museum, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. The Fort Worth Zoo, consistently ranked among the top zoos in the nation, attracts millions of visitors annually.
The historic Fort Worth Stockyards preserve the city's Western heritage and feature daily cattle drives, rodeos, and authentic cowboy culture. The Sundance Square downtown entertainment district offers shopping, dining, and cultural events in a pedestrian-friendly environment.
Education plays a significant role in the city, with Texas Christian University (TCU) and Texas Wesleyan University located within city limits. The Fort Worth Independent School District serves the majority of the city's students.
The climate is characterized as humid subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters. Fort Worth experiences an average annual rainfall of approximately 34 inches, with most precipitation occurring during spring and fall months.
