The site was first established as a U.S. Army military fort in 1850 during the Third Seminole War. The fort was named after Colonel Abraham Charles Myers, a quartermaster of the U.S. Army. After the war ended, the military abandoned the post, and civilian settlement gradually developed around the former fort grounds. The city was officially incorporated in 1904.
Fort Myers is widely known as "The City of Palms" due to the royal palm trees that line McGregor Boulevard, one of the city's main thoroughfares. The trees were originally planted at the direction of inventor Thomas Edison, who maintained his winter residence in Fort Myers beginning in 1886. His close friend and industrialist Henry Ford later acquired an adjacent estate. Both properties are now preserved as the Edison and Ford Winter Estates, one of the most visited historic sites in Florida, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Edison conducted botanical experiments on the grounds, particularly focused on finding domestic sources of natural rubber.
The city is part of the Cape Coral–Fort Myers metropolitan area, one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the United States during the early 21st century.
In September 2022, Hurricane Ian made landfall near Fort Myers as a Category 4 storm, causing catastrophic damage to the city and surrounding region. It was recorded as one of the deadliest and most destructive hurricanes in Florida's history.
