About Durham

Durham is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located in Durham County. With a population of approximately 296,186 as of 2023, it serves as the county seat and forms part of the Research Triangle metropolitan region alongside Raleigh and Chapel Hill.

The city was incorporated in 1869 and named after Bartlett Snipes Durham, who donated land for a railroad station. Its early economy was built on tobacco farming and manufacturing, earning it the nickname "Bull City" after the Bull Durham Tobacco brand. The American Tobacco Company, founded by James Buchanan Duke, became a major industrial force in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Durham is home to Duke University, a prestigious private research institution established in 1838. The university's campus features the iconic Duke Chapel, a Gothic Revival cathedral completed in 1932. The Sarah P. Duke Gardens spans 55 acres and attracts visitors year-round with its diverse plant collections.

The city's economy has diversified significantly from its tobacco roots. The Research Triangle Park, partially located in Durham, hosts numerous technology and pharmaceutical companies. Major employers include Duke University and Health System, IBM, and GlaxoSmithKline. The downtown area has undergone extensive revitalization, featuring the American Tobacco Campus, which transformed former tobacco warehouses into office and entertainment spaces.

Notable cultural attractions include the Nasher Museum of Art, the Museum of Life and Science, and the Carolina Theatre. The Bennett Place State Historic Site commemorates the location where Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston surrendered to Union General William T. Sherman in 1865. The city's food scene has gained national recognition, with numerous acclaimed restaurants and the annual World Beer Festival.

Durham covers approximately 112 square miles and features a humid subtropical climate. The city has invested heavily in public transportation, including bus rapid transit and bike-sharing programs, supporting its growing population and commitment to sustainable urban development.
