About Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport

Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) is a major international airport located in Romulus, Michigan, approximately 20 miles southwest of downtown Detroit. Opened in 1930, the airport serves as the primary gateway to the Detroit metropolitan area and operates as a hub for Delta Air Lines.

The airport features two main terminal buildings connected by an automated people mover system. The McNamara Terminal, opened in 2002, primarily handles Delta Air Lines flights and international arrivals. The smaller Warren Cleage Terminal accommodates other domestic carriers. DTW covers approximately 4,850 acres and operates six runways, with the longest measuring 12,003 feet.

Detroit Metropolitan ranks among the busiest airports in the United States, handling over 34 million passengers annually. The facility offers nonstop service to more than 160 destinations worldwide, including major cities across North America, Europe, and Asia. Notable international routes include flights to Tokyo, Amsterdam, Paris, and Seoul.

The airport underwent significant modernization in the early 2000s, including the construction of the McNamara Terminal at a cost of $1.2 billion. DTW features extensive dining and shopping options, business centers, and art installations throughout its terminals.

Wayne County Airport Authority operates the facility, which employs thousands of workers and contributes billions of dollars annually to the regional economy. The airport maintains its three-letter code DTW, derived from "Detroit Wayne."
