About Denver

Denver is the capital and most populous city of Colorado, United States. Located in the South Platte River Valley on the western edge of the High Plains, the city sits at an elevation of 5,280 feet above sea level, earning it the nickname "Mile High City." With a population of approximately 729,000 within the city limits and over 3 million in the metropolitan area, Denver serves as the economic and cultural center of the Rocky Mountain region.

Founded in 1858 during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush, Denver was originally established as a mining town and supply center for gold prospectors. The city was named after James W. Denver, the territorial governor of Kansas. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Denver experienced significant growth due to mining, agriculture, and railroad development.

The city's economy is highly diversified, with major industries including aerospace, telecommunications, energy, healthcare, and technology. Denver is home to numerous Fortune 500 companies and serves as a regional headquarters for many national corporations. The presence of federal agencies and military installations also contributes significantly to the local economy.

Denver's downtown area features several notable landmarks, including the Colorado State Capitol, whose gold dome commemorates the Colorado Gold Rush. The Denver Art Museum, designed by Daniel Libeskind, is renowned for its distinctive angular architecture and extensive collection of American Indian art. The 16th Street Mall is a pedestrian-friendly shopping and entertainment district that runs through the heart of downtown.

The city is known for its extensive park system, with over 200 parks covering more than 14,000 acres. City Park houses the Denver Zoo and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Washington Park is another popular recreational area featuring lakes, gardens, and sports facilities.

Denver International Airport, one of the largest airports in the United States by land area, serves as a major transportation hub for the western United States. The airport's distinctive white tent-like roof structure has become an iconic symbol of the city.

The city experiences a semi-arid climate with four distinct seasons, characterized by mild temperatures, low humidity, and abundant sunshine. Denver receives an average of 300 days of sunshine per year, making it one of the sunniest cities in the United States.
