About DeLand
DeLand is a city located in Volusia County, Florida, United States. Situated approximately 40 miles northeast of Orlando and 25 miles west of Daytona Beach, the city serves as the county seat of Volusia County. With a population of approximately 37,000 residents as of the 2020 census, DeLand covers an area of about 19 square miles.
The city was founded in 1876 and named after Henry Addison DeLand, a New York industrialist who established a citrus-growing enterprise in the area. DeLand incorporated as a city in 1882 and quickly became known for its citrus industry, which remained a significant economic driver until the Great Freeze of 1894-1895 devastated local groves.
DeLand is home to Stetson University, a prestigious private liberal arts institution founded in 1883. The university, originally named DeLand University, was renamed in honor of Philadelphia hat manufacturer John B. Stetson, who became a major benefactor. The campus features notable architecture including the DeLand Hall and Elizabeth Hall, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The city's downtown area features a well-preserved historic district with numerous buildings dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The DeLand Museum of Art showcases regional and contemporary works, while the Henry A. DeLand House Museum preserves the Victorian-era home of the city's founder.
Natural attractions include Blue Spring State Park, located just outside the city limits, which serves as a winter refuge for West Indian manatees. The park's crystal-clear spring maintains a constant temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. Hontoon Island State Park offers camping and recreational activities along the St. Johns River.
DeLand's economy today relies primarily on education, healthcare, and tourism. The presence of Stetson University contributes significantly to the local economy, while the city's proximity to major metropolitan areas and natural attractions supports a growing service sector. The DeLand Municipal Airport serves general aviation needs and hosts the annual DeLand Sport Aviation Showcase.
The city maintains a humid subtropical climate typical of central Florida, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Annual events include the DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts and various cultural programs hosted by Stetson University throughout the academic year.
