About Dallas Fort Worth Airport

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is a major international airport serving the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex in Texas, United States. Located approximately 17 miles northwest of downtown Dallas and 13 miles northeast of downtown Fort Worth, DFW operates as a primary hub for American Airlines and serves as one of the busiest airports in the world by aircraft movements and passenger traffic.

The airport officially opened on January 13, 1974, replacing the older Love Field and Greater Southwest International Airport. DFW was designed as a joint venture between the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth to create a world-class aviation facility that could accommodate the growing air travel demands of the region. The airport spans approximately 17,207 acres, making it larger than the island of Manhattan and one of the largest airports in the United States by total land area.

DFW features five terminals designated A, B, C, D, and E, connected by the Skylink automated people mover system. Terminal D serves as the primary international gateway, while the other terminals handle both domestic and international flights. The airport operates seven runways, with four parallel runways measuring 13,400 feet in length and three crosswind runways.

As American Airlines' largest hub, DFW handles over 900 daily departures to more than 250 destinations worldwide. The airport serves approximately 75 million passengers annually, ranking among the top ten busiest airports globally. In addition to American Airlines, DFW hosts numerous domestic and international carriers, including Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, British Airways, Lufthansa, and Emirates.

Economic impact represents a significant aspect of DFW's operations, contributing over $37 billion annually to the North Texas economy and supporting approximately 60,000 on-site jobs. The airport generates substantial revenue through aeronautical activities, concessions, parking, and real estate development.

DFW has received multiple awards for customer service, operational efficiency, and environmental sustainability initiatives. The airport operates its own police force, fire department, and medical services. Recent expansion projects include terminal renovations, gate additions, and infrastructure improvements to accommodate projected passenger growth. The facility also houses the American Airlines C.R. Smith Museum and maintains extensive cargo operations, ranking among the top freight airports in the United States by total cargo volume.
