About Dallas

Dallas is a major city located in north-central Texas and serves as the seat of Dallas County. With a population of approximately 1.3 million people within the city limits and over 7.6 million in the greater metropolitan area, Dallas ranks as the third-largest city in Texas and the ninth-largest in the United States. The city covers an area of 385.9 square miles and sits at an elevation of 430 feet above sea level.

Founded in 1841 by John Neely Bryan, Dallas was initially established as a trading post along the Trinity River. The city experienced rapid growth following the arrival of the railroad in the 1870s, which transformed it into a major commercial hub for cotton, cattle, and oil industries.

Dallas serves as a significant economic center, hosting the headquarters of numerous Fortune 500 companies including ExxonMobil, AT&T, Southwest Airlines, and American Airlines. The city's economy is diversified across sectors such as telecommunications, technology, banking, commerce, and transportation. The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport ranks among the world's busiest airports by passenger traffic and serves as a major hub for American Airlines.

The city features several notable attractions and landmarks. Dealey Plaza marks the site of President John F. Kennedy's assassination in 1963 and houses the Sixth Floor Museum. The Dallas Arts District spans 68 acres in downtown Dallas and contains multiple venues including the Dallas Museum of Art, Nasher Sculpture Center, and Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. Fair Park hosts the annual State Fair of Texas and contains several museums and the Cotton Bowl Stadium.

Dallas maintains a council-manager form of government with a mayor and 14 city council members representing different districts. The city operates under a strong mayor system where the mayor serves as the chief executive officer.

The climate is classified as humid subtropical, characterized by hot summers and mild winters. Average temperatures range from 47°F in January to 86°F in July, with annual precipitation averaging 37 inches.

Major sports teams include the Dallas Cowboys (NFL), Dallas Mavericks (NBA), Dallas Stars (NHL), and FC Dallas (MLS). The Cowboys play at AT&T Stadium in nearby Arlington.
